The kids from the 80’s or the early 90’s did not grow up watching 100’s of channels. Doordarshan was all they had, but all the amazing shows made their childhood so much special.
Established in the year 1959, Doordarshan completed a long journey of 57 years this 15th September.
1. Malgudi Days
One of the sweetest memories of our childhood lies with this show. This show still tickles our minds and makes us smile. This series was based on the works of R.K. Narayan, his brother and R. K. Laxman was the sketch artist. The stories of Malgudi days were based on the simple lives of the people living in the small town of Malgudi. Doordarshan telecasted thirty-nine episodes of the show. Later on, the show was re-telecasted on Sony Entertainment Television and MAA Television in Telugu language.
2. Jungle Book
This show is one of the biggest hits among the 90’s Indian children. Jungle book shakes the very core of nostalgia among the kids and the teenagers who grew up watching the same.
This show was all about the commandos joining the army training school. It shows their life, their pranks and their punishments. Fauji, among other serials, was Shah Rukh Khan’s stepping stone to Bollywood.
Shaktimaan was probably the first superhero (India’s Superman) for the Indian kids from the 90s. Along with entertainment, the show also promoted good morals, hygiene and knowledge among the children.
5. Dekh Bhai Dekh
Dekh Bhai Dekh was a famous sitcom that was produced by none other than Jaya Bachchan. It remiered on Doordarshan metro, on 6th May 1993. It was created, developed, edited, directed by Aanand Mahendroo under the banner of Saraswati Audio Visuals Pvt Ltd.
When the show first premiered in 1988 on Doordarshan, people did not expect it to become such a hit. However, within weeks of its launch, the show became a big part of the Sunday morning for a lot of people.
The show was a detective-thriller series, showing various crime scene investigations. It commenced in May 1994 on Doordarshan. The show starred Vijay Anand as Sam D’Silva and Saurabh Shukla as Gopichand.
Udaan was a popular Hindi TV serial that aired Doordarshan, from the year 1989 – 91. It featured the struggle of a woman who was aspiring to be an IPS officer.
9. Byomkesh Bakshi
It is the first Hindi Television series based on the character of Byomkesh Bakshi by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The show starred Rajit Kapur as Byomkesh Bakshi and K.K. Raina as Ajit Bandyopadhyay. The show was aired on Doordarshan from 1993 to 1997.
This is an Indian epic television series, which was aired during 1987-1988 based on the hindu epic of the same name. It was created, written and directed by Ramanand Sagar.
These are just a few of the epic shows aired on Doordarshan. There were many more shows that grabbed the attention of the viewer and were massive hits. Though we did not have much of a choice back then, these shows became an integral part of our lives.
